Algyő Tisza Bridge Upgrade
The upgrade of the Tisza crossing at Algyő on Main Road 47 is one of the region's key transport infrastructure projects. Its objective is to increase crossing capacity by expanding the existing two-lane road connection into a dual carriageway, while also improving safety for road users, cyclists and pedestrians.
The development includes the construction of a new bridge adjacent to the existing structure, followed by the reconstruction of the existing Algyő Tisza Bridge after traffic has been diverted. Once completed, the two bridge structures will operate together as a four-lane crossing on Main Road 47.
As a bridge design subcontractor to the lead designer, we were responsible for the redesign of the main river bridge carrying the future right-hand carriageway. The company's scope covers the redesign of the main river bridge carrying the future right-hand carriageway. The design approach makes maximum use of the existing substructures while creating a modern bridge that meets current structural, hydraulic and seismic requirements.
The right-hand carriageway bridge consists of a three-span main river bridge connected to approach bridges on both floodplain sections. The river bridge is designed as a continuous steel box girder with an orthotropic deck, twin main girders and a single-cell cross-section, while the floodplain bridges are continuous composite steel-concrete girder structures. Particular attention was given to navigation clearance, design flood levels and compliance with hydraulic engineering requirements.
One of the project's principal engineering challenges was integrating the existing bridge infrastructure into a contemporary structural solution. Existing foundations and substructures are retained wherever feasible and strengthened or modified to accommodate the new superstructure, increased structural demands and current safety standards. The design combines the reuse of existing pile foundations with new bored reinforced concrete piles, while the reconstruction of piers and pier caps ensures the long-term performance of the bridge system.
The bridge design also incorporates modern pavement, drainage, structural inspection and bridge monitoring systems that support efficient operation and long-term asset management.
By combining the rehabilitation of the existing structure with a modern superstructure and durable engineering solutions, the project provides a long-term, higher-capacity and safer crossing of the Tisza River, supporting the future transport needs of Main Road 47.
